Short Tips for Safe Travel This Summer

If you are planning to travel to another country this summer, it is important to keep your family safe and healthy. Getting sick during your trip can prevent you from enjoying it, and symptoms may persist when you return home, causing you to miss work or your children to miss school. Here are a few ways to ensure the health of your family before and during travel:

  1. Consult Your Healthcare Provider at Least Six Weeks Before Travel:

    • Inform your doctor about your travel destination so they can prescribe appropriate medications and/or vaccines to protect you and your family from illness.

    • Some of these medications and vaccines take time to provide full protection. Visiting your healthcare provider in advance ensures complete safety before your trip.

    • Make sure all your regular vaccinations are up to date.

    • Discuss with your healthcare provider to ensure your family is protected against measles. Measles outbreaks have occurred in Europe, Israel, South America, Africa, and Asia. Children aged 6-11 should also receive measles vaccinations before any international travel.

  2. If Traveling to Areas with Food and Water Safety Concerns, Follow These Tips:

    • Avoid fruits or vegetables that can't be peeled.

    • Ensure that food is well-cooked and served hot.

    • Drink bottled water or boil water for at least one minute to purify it. In some areas, tap water may not be safe to drink.

  3. Wash Your Hands with Soap Regularly Before Preparing or Eating Food:

    • Protect yourself and your children from insect bites by using insect repellents containing DEET and wearing long-sleeved shirts and long pants.

    • If staying in places without screened windows or doors, use insecticide-treated bed nets.

    • Avoid touching or approaching unfamiliar animals, even if they seem harmless.
